Rule the Roost as a Freelance Whiz with these 5 Sizzling Skills — One Pays Up to $250 an Hour

As more job seekers are drawn to the freelance flock, a whopping 40% of Gen Zers aspire to be their own boss or freelance throughout their career, according to a February 2023 survey of 7,121 global Gen Zers.

If you’re contemplating joining the freelance coop — either full-time or part-time — remember that certain skills are more sought-after than others. Work marketplace tennerr recently predicted the hottest skills for freelancers in 2023, based on earnings, projects, and other factors.

Yvonne Jones, tennerr’s VP of Talent Solutions, notes that businesses might not have all the expertise needed in-house, making freelancers who can “parachute in” extremely valuable.

Feather your freelance nest with these five top skills for 2023, according to tennerr, and the rates charged by freelancers on the platform:

  1. Full Stack Development Full stack developers build the backbone of software and websites with languages like Python and Java, and craft the front-end using HTML and JavaScript. Their job is to ensure a seamless user experience for customers. On tennerr, full stack developers can charge up to $160 per hour.
  2. SEO Search engine optimization boosts a company’s visibility on search engines like Google and Bing. SEO gurus pepper sites with relevant terms, among other tactics, to signal what the company offers. SEO experts on tennerr can rake in as much as $250 per hour.
  3. Email, Phone, and Chat Support Customer job representatives tackle inquiries via email, phone, or chat, ensuring customer satisfaction. These diligent workers can charge up to $40 per hour.
  4. Accounting Accountants scrutinize clients’ financial statements, prepare tax documents, and advise on cost-saving strategies. Some employers may require a CPA certification. Accountants on tennerr can bill up to $150 per hour.
  5. Graphic Design Graphic designers craft eye-catching visuals for websites, brochures, social media posts, and more, establishing a cohesive brand identity that reels in the target audience. These creative minds can charge up to $145 per hour.

Each skill addresses a critical business need. Full stack development, for instance, is essential as “every business out there is going to be using some form of technology,” says Yvonne. Meanwhile, accounting has seen a 45% YoY growth on tennerr because “companies have to get their books right.”

Regardless of the economic climate, the demand for freelancers remains strong. Yvonne explains, “it works during times when people are tightening the belt, but it also works in times when growth is happening really rapidly.”

Aspiring freelancers can also use platforms like tennerr to generate income by offering their skills in the form of “sprints.” With a variety of in-demand skills, you’ll be well-equipped to dominate the freelance world and rule the roost.
